Azzuro Solar Water Heating
Hot water heating consumes about 50% of your household energy. Installing solar water heating is the easiest way to save energy and money in your home and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
At Good Energy we specify Azzuro Solar water heating. This product, and our installations, are high quality and accredited by the Solar Industries Association of New Zealand.
5 Great Reasons for Choosing an Azzuro Domestic Solar Water Heating System:
- Free Heating - do something about those un-ending power price increases!
- Eco Friendly - totally renewable solar energy!
- Professional Plumbing Service - right first time!
- Proven Solar Collector technology - you know it works!
- $500 - 1000 EECA grant!
Choose an Azzuro system and you will get one of the most effective solar water heating products available. The revolutionary German design maximizes solar collecting performance of evacuated tubes.
- German Technology - Tested and Proven in NZ.
- 7 year manufacturers warranty.
- Expected lifetime over 20 years.
- Maintenance free.
Evacuated Tubes
- The full spectrum of light, including Ultra Violet, is absorbed on the inner surface of the tube by a selective coating. Like a thermos flask, the vacuum between outer and inner tubes greatly reduces heat loss so efficient heating is provided even on a cold, cloudy day.
- The vacuum insulation protects against frosts (tested to -50 degrees Celcius).
- Our toughened glass tubes are tested to withstand 25 mm hail stones (meets NZ standards).
A robust closed-loop system
A continuous loop of copper pipe runs through the collector panel. The fluid in this long loop is a key part of the system as it transfers heat quickly and efficiently to the water in your cylinder. The water for use in your house does not flow through the collector panel on the roof, avoiding scale build up and performance loss.
The Azzuro advantage
- The patented Compound Parabolic Collector (CPC) reflects sunlight back into the collector from every angle to substantially increase performance.
- Double-pass copper U-tubes maximize heat transfer in the collector.
- Water is use as the heat transfer fluid as it is more effective than glycol.
Savings
Azzuro systems typically save 74% of your annual water heating costs. During summer savings are usually 100%. Supplementary heating (electric, gas or wetback) can boost the system, if required.
In less than 10 years it is expected that the cost of electricity will double and it's supply will be less secure. By switching to solar water heating today you will; reduce fossil-fuel powered electricity demand, save money, and have secure sustainable energy in your home.
Azzuro systems are specified to match your individual requirements:
- permanent residence or weekend/holiday usage
- new or existing homes
- commercial use (schools, motels, campgrounds, resthomes, dairy farms, etc.)
As well as supplying hot water, Azzuro systems can provide:
- Underfloor heating assistance
- Heating for your swimming pool
- Integration with a wetback fire
Government finance assistance is available from EECA*
We will help you through the consent and finance process, as required.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my existing cylinder?
You may be able to - please ask us if your existing cylinder is suitable. We recommend Azzuro Solar Cylinders because these are specially designed to maximise the solar energy available to you, and so minimise the amount of top-up electricity required for your household.
Why are solar cylinders much larger than the cylinders normally used?
Solar cylinders are specifically designed to ensure that as much energy as possible is captured from the sun, for a given system design. Solar cylinders are sized to hold more water than non-solar cylinders.
Warm water in the cylinder naturally rises to the top of the cylinders. This is where it is drawn off when you turn the tap on. Cooler water tends to be at the lower part of the cylinder.
For open loop systems, the water in the colder part of the cylinder, at and near the bottom, is drawn through the solar collectors to get warmed by the sun. We prefer this water to be as cool as practical when it circulates through the solar collectors, so that we capture as much of the sun's energy as possible.
For closed loop systems, the heat exchange coil, which carries heated fluid back from the collectors, is located at the lower part of the cylinder, so that the sun warmed fluid can give up as much of its captured heat energy as possible, by giving it up to the coolest water in the cylinder.
It is preferable for the electric element of solar cylinders to be located near the middle of the tank, so that when the element kicks in, only the water above the element is boosted to higher temperatures.
In order to provide you with the same volume of stored hot water as a non-solar cylinder at any time, we work out the amount of water above the element which your family would need. This means that the tank we use needs to be larger than normal.
For example, if you normally have a 180 litre tank at home for 4 people, we will recommend a solar cylinder of 300 litres capacity for you.
How long does it take to have an Azzuro Solar Hot Water System installed?
Most of our systems take a day or so to install, but some systems take longer depending on ease of access, and cylinder configurations.
